Introduction to fast fashion affects of the environment
Fast fashion not only affects the environment, it is also destroying the world we know today and is using up precious resources, such as water.
Water and Fashion?
The fashion industry is the second largest user of water in the world, using around 70 million tons of water per year. In this, Cotton is one of the biggest contributors to this water usage as 30 000 litres of water is used to make 1kg of cotton and ONE cotton T-Shirt needs around 2700 litres of water by itself to be produced. This amount of water is enough for a person to drink for 900 days- almost two and a half years! With people in developing countries not getting enough clean water for one day, we as developed countries need to consider if we really need those 7 T-Shirts we thought were cute and now that we have the knowledge of how much water wastage is really happening- is the developed world really that selfish?
Really Nylon and polyester? why you do this to the environment?
Nylon and polyester are super common in any fast fashion/cheap clothing shop. For one, Nylon is manufactured using nitrous oxide, which is a greenhouse gas and has 310 times stronger effect on the environment than carbon dioxide. The mass production of nylon is extremely harmful to the environment and is a major contributor to Global Warming. Polyester on the other hand needs water for the fibres to form properly, therefore another factor which uses up water.
Conclusion
Overall, the fast fashion industry isn't a sustainable one. With the large amounts of natural fibres, chemically manufactured fibres, water and energy used to create the products, soon enough there won't be enough of these for the industry to keep the over-use that they currently doing.
